08/10/2015 - Booth Walkoff/Smith and Thompson Duel Cap Special Weekend

Booth Walkoff/Smith and Thompson Duel Cap Special Weekend

Sunday, August 9, 2015 - Playoffs - Round 1

(5) Lannon Stonemen 2 at (4) Brookfield Bulldogs 3

In the first game of the day, the Lannon Stonemen rolled into Brookfield hoping to break their losing streak against Brookfield teams from 2015 but faced a red hot Brookfield team that is appearing to be peaking at the right time.  Brookfield got board first in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Ryan Hinz converted on a 2 out 2 run singled to bring home Patrick O'Brien and Jeff Lueck.  The score remained 2-0 Brookfield until the top half of the 8th when Don Matovich opened the inning up with a single, a fielder's choice by Dean Haase, a walk to Dan Wnuk, and followed by a big 2 run double by Jason Kalman.  The score would remain tied until the bottom the 9th.  With 2 outs, and a 2 ball count to Scott Booth, Booth would send the next pitch over the left field fence for the game winning home run.  Nick Erd pitched well in the loss for Lannon, and Greg Basthemer pitched well in the start for Brookfield.  Jeff Lueck picked up his 3rd straight victory on the mound for Brookfield.  Ryan Hinz, Bill Gorman, and Jeff Lueck had multiple hit games for the Bulldogs.  Don Matovich and Jason Kalman had multiple hit games for Lannon in the loss.  Brookfield advances to the Final 4, and will play at top seeded Pewaukee next Sunday, August 16, at 1 PM.

(6) Monches Irish 0 at (3) Sussex Cardinals 1

However you describe this game to generations to come, the Monches Irish's first appearance in the playoffs in 43 seasons, and the Sussex Cardinals looking to finally get the grand championships, the story will be just how good Andy Smith and Travis Thompson pitched on this day in Sussex.  To be one of the nearly 1000 people in attendance got a treat to how special this division is, and the level of pitching is this league.  Travis Thompson threw a complete game 4 hit shutout, while Andy Smith matched the future Hall Of Famer pitch for pitch with his own 5 hit complete game.  The only real threat of the game would end up being the run that scored in the bottom of the 9th.  After the fastest player of the league Taylor Paepke reached with bunt single and reached 2nd on a stolen base, Smith bared down, and got out Seth Kroenke and Todd Johnson, before Ben Wilkins hit a ball to the hole and off a Monches glove.  On the contact and seeing the ball sitting in the grass, Paepke turned third and scored without a throw to give Sussex the victory.  Ryan Weissman had the lone multiple hit game for either team.  Sussex advances to play the second seeded West Bend 7 Up next Sunday, August 16, at 1 PM in West Bend.
